Hungary faces surge in wildfires amid drought and fire bans

Hungary is facing a significant surge in outdoor fires driven by drought conditions and human negligence. A nationwide fire ban remains in effect, yet incidents continue to threaten natural landscapes and infrastructure.

In Heves County, emergency services have responded to over 500 outdoor fires this year, destroying an area equivalent to 386 football pitches. Recent incidents in Gyöngyöshalász and Kömlő involved fires spreading through dry vegetation and waste, damaging vehicles and agricultural facilities. Firefighters from various municipal and professional units have been deployed to contain these blazes.

In Kuta, a residential fire caused by burning household waste nearly reached a nearby forest. Local volunteer and professional firefighters managed to prevent a larger disaster by battling the flames in high vegetation. Authorities emphasize that burning waste is strictly prohibited due to the release of toxic compounds and the extreme risk of spreading during the current dry spell.
