Hungary wildfires July–August 2026
Overview
Following the July 31 blaze near Pilisszentlászló and simultaneous border fires, Hungarian fire services continued to confront multiple wildfires through early August. On July 31, a forest fire near Pilisszentlászló engulfed roughly 15 hectares of woodland; professional and volunteer units contained the main front by the following morning. Simultaneously, fires near the Hungarian-Austrian border at Fertőrákos burned approximately 10 hectares and crossed into Austria. Other hotspots were reported near Szarvas and between Érd and Százhalombatta, where compost ignited. On 3 August, a fire near Külsővat in Veszprém County burned about 20 hectares of dry grass, farmland and forest understory, reaching the roof of an unused farm building. Municipal brigades from several towns, coordinated by the county disaster-relief service, extinguished the blaze; no injuries were reported. In the preceding 72 hours, services also responded to a car fire on the M6 highway near Paks and a three-hectare blaze in Mecseknádas. By 5 August, extreme heat and drought triggered a surge of outdoor fires. The National Disaster Management Authority recorded 21 forest and vegetation fires in a single day and 69 alerts in one week in Csongrád-Csanád County alone. A fatal incident occurred near Kiskunfélegyháza, where an 84-year-old man died as a fire spread over farmland, forest and railway ballast. Firefighters rescued 19 people, eight horses, and approximately 100 dogs in Ercsi and protected livestock elsewhere. By 8 August, large-scale fires continued. In Lajoskomárom, firefighters worked to prevent several hundred cubic meters of burning manure from reaching a stable containing 500-600 bales. In Algyő, two separate vegetation fires burned 22 hectares and 10 hectares respectively. Authorities have linked many ignitions to human negligence and maintain a nationwide fire ban. By mid-August, the surge in outdoor fires continued, driven by drought and human negligence.
