Hungary food prices expected to rise despite recent decline
Recent data from the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) indicates that the strengthening of the Hungarian forint has accelerated the decline in domestic consumer prices, particularly in exchange-rate-sensitive sectors like food. Between April and August, the annual inflation rate for food products dropped by 4.2 percentage points. In July, monthly food prices decreased by 1.7 percent, significantly outperforming the stagnation seen in the eurozone.
However, the MNB warns of a reversal in these trends. While current inflation is at a decade-low of 1.8 percent, experts forecast it will rise to 3.1 percent next year. Food prices, which saw a 4.1 percent annual decrease in July (excluding restaurant costs), are projected to increase by 5.8 percent in 2027 and 5.9 percent in 2028.
Other sectors show diverging paths. Alcohol and tobacco products are expected to rise by 8.5 percent, partly due to an upcoming excise tax increase effective November 2026. Conversely, fuel prices are forecasted to drop by 2.3 percent in 2027 as energy market conditions stabilize.
