Hungary fuel prices set to rise as diesel may breach protected level

A wholesale price hike is scheduled for Friday, raising the cost of both gasoline and diesel in Hungary. The average diesel price, currently at the protected ceiling of 613 forints per litre, could move above that limit after the increase, while gasoline is expected to rise by six forints per litre.

Industry observers note that some stations are keeping prices below the official caps, suggesting possible unofficial price‑setting. Analysts point to alleged political pressure on major retailers such as Shell and Mol, which may influence smaller stations to maintain lower prices and avoid losses without compensation from the government.

The price differentials between Hungary and neighboring EU members remain significant, with diesel in countries like the Czech Republic and Poland still cheaper by roughly 90 forints per litre.
