Hungary implements higher environmental fines amid rising fuel costs

In Hungary, fuel prices have seen significant increases following the removal of price protections. The average price for 95-octane gasoline rose by 47 HUF to 642 HUF per liter, while diesel increased by 95 HUF to 709 HUF per liter. While some citizens have called for a price cap of 480 HUF, officials note that fuel demand remained steady through the summer months.

Simultaneously, the Hungarian government is tightening environmental regulations. New rules, effective October 25, will increase fines for large-scale polluting industrial plants. The maximum fine for environmental damage will rise from 2 billion HUF to 5 billion HUF. For repeat offenders—those fined at least twice for pollution in the last five years—the minimum fine will be set at 0.5 percent of their previous year's net revenue or at least 5 million HUF.
