Hungary initiates investigations into MNB funds and asset recovery leadership

In Hungary, significant developments are unfolding regarding the oversight of public funds and anti-corruption efforts. Dávid Jancsics, a corruption researcher, has withdrawn his candidacy for the presidency of the National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Office (NVVH). Jancsics stated that the role currently requires a leader with a prosecutor or investigator temperament—a ‘relentless pitbull’—to handle the urgent tasks of accountability and asset recovery. He noted that his background is better suited for long-term anti-corruption institutional development.

Simultaneously, a parliamentary investigative committee is set to begin its work regarding alleged abuses at the Hungarian National Bank (MNB). Led by Attila Csőszi, the committee aims to investigate the disappearance and use of hundreds of billions of forints transferred to central bank foundations. Key areas of inquiry include the allocation of 144 billion forints to institutions in Kecskemét, the rising costs of the MNB headquarters, and real estate transactions involving significant public funds. The committee seeks to identify those responsible and prevent future occurrences.
