Hungary installs new speed cameras on M1 motorway

Ten new speed measurement devices have been installed on sections of the M1 motorway currently undergoing expansion. These microwave radar-based units, deployed by the MKIF in coordination with the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), are VÉDA-compatible and capable of monitoring not only instantaneous speed but also average speed and following distances.

The deployment is intended to enhance safety near construction zones where narrower lanes and diversions are in place. While the technology allows for average speed enforcement—a method used in several European countries to prevent drivers from simply slowing down at camera locations—authorities have not yet implemented fines based on average speed in Hungary.

Statistics indicate that improper speed selection was a factor in 26 percent of injury-causing road accidents in the first half of 2025. The new devices provide immediate feedback to drivers to encourage compliance with speed limits near work sites.
