Traffic speed enforcement in Hungary

Overview

Traffic enforcement in Hungary utilizes a variety of technologies with differing operational capabilities. Fixed radar systems, such as the VÉDA system, typically monitor vehicles within 20 to 30 meters, though some cameras in traffic boxes can detect vehicles up to 150 meters away. Mobile laser devices offer significantly more range, capable of measuring speeds from over one kilometer away, even from moving vehicles.

Expanding on these capabilities, ten new microwave radar-based devices have been installed on the M1 motorway near construction zones. Deployed by the MKIF and the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), these VÉDA-compatible units can monitor instantaneous speed, average speed, and following distances. While the technology supports average speed enforcement, authorities have not yet begun issuing fines based on that specific metric.
