Hungary joins international declaration calling for ceasefire in Ukraine

Hungary has joined an international declaration expressing solidarity with Ukraine and calling on Russia to accept a ceasefire and engage in meaningful peace negotiations. The move follows a period of diplomatic tension between Budapest and Kyiv.

Issued ahead of a United Nations Security Council meeting, the declaration was presented by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on behalf of the European Union and 51 nations. Signatories include all EU member states, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Canada, Georgia, and Moldova.

The document expresses concern regarding Russian attacks on civilians and infrastructure, urging full compliance with international humanitarian law. It also addresses threats in the Black Sea, highlighting potential risks to Ukrainian grain exports and global food security. The signatories support efforts to ensure freedom of navigation and the protection of critical commercial shipping.
