Overview

At the 81st UN General Assembly, 51 nations—including France and various European Union members—issued a joint declaration calling for an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire with Russia. The declaration emphasizes state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and adherence to the UN Charter. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas noted that Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire starting in March 2025, urging Russia to engage in serious negotiations for lasting peace.

The signatories expressed concern over civilian casualties, attacks on critical infrastructure, and maritime restrictions in the Black Sea that threaten Ukrainian grain exports and global food security. They called for the protection of commercial vessels and the safe return of prisoners and civilians.

Following the initial announcement, Hungary joined the declaration, expressing solidarity with Ukraine and calling on Russia to accept a ceasefire. This move by Budapest follows a period of diplomatic tension between Hungary and Kyiv.
