Hungary consumer protection authorities inspect Black Friday sales

Hungarian consumer protection authorities have launched inspections ahead of the Black Friday shopping period to ensure price transparency and prevent misleading commercial practices. Under the guidance of the National Authority for Consumer Protection (NKFH), government offices are monitoring both physical and online retailers.

Data from previous inspections highlights the scale of the issue: in a recent review of 110 traditional stores, authorities found violations in 25 cases, representing a 23 percent infringement rate. In the online sector, 131 out of 906 products inspected showed irregularities, a rate of approximately 14 percent.

Regulators are specifically checking that the final price is clearly visible and that any advertised discount is calculated based on the lowest price applied during the 30 days preceding the sale. To enforce these rules, authorities may review price histories and conduct test purchases to verify that advertised discounts are actually applied at the point of sale.
