Hungary leads EU anti‑immigration ranking as 87% oppose migrants

A new analysis by the Republikon Institute, using European Social Survey, TÁRKI and MIPEX data, finds that 87 % of Hungarians either reject all immigrants from poorer countries or would allow only a few. The study places Hungary at the top of an 11‑country EU immigration‑attitude index, ahead of Slovenia, Austria, Poland and Czechia.

Public opinion has remained stable since 2011, with minimal shifts during the 2015 migration crisis. The report notes that the current Magyar government continues a restrictive migration stance, closing the guest‑worker residence‑permit scheme and rejecting the EU Migration Pact unless altered. Human‑rights groups have criticized the government's rhetoric as resembling the previous Orbán administration’s exclusionary language. Hungary also ranks near the bottom of the Migrant Integration Policy Index, indicating weak integration support and limited access to health, education and citizenship services.
