Hungary lifts EU veto on Ukraine accession talks

Relations between Hungary and Ukraine are undergoing a significant diplomatic reset. Following the election of Péter Magyar as Hungarian Prime Minister, Budapest has lifted its veto on Ukraine's EU accession negotiations. This decision follows the Ukrainian Parliament's passage of legislation ensuring educational rights for the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathia region, addressing a long-standing source of tension.

As a result of this breakthrough, the European Union has agreed to open two additional negotiating groups for Ukraine's accession process, bringing the total to four out of six. This progress has paved the way for a scheduled bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Magyar and President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels on the sidelines of the EU summit. The meeting is expected to be a brief, one-on-one discussion focused on reviewing recent progress and discussing future cooperation rather than revisiting past disputes. Magyar has indicated he seeks concrete assurances that Ukraine will fulfill its commitments regarding minority rights within a specific timeframe.
