Hungary merges MTVA into Duna Media, cuts staff and plans M1 news return

On 26 July 2026 the Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund (MTVA) was merged into Duna Media Nonprofit Zrt, ending a dual institutional structure that had existed for more than 1½ decades. The integration starts a 90‑day transition after which the public broadcaster will operate solely as Duna Media.

As part of the reform, more than 40 employees were placed on paid leave from 7 July; about one‑fifth of those have already returned to their former duties, while negotiations continue with the rest. The organisation reports savings of roughly 3 billion forints by halting external programme production and other cost‑cutting measures.

The broadcaster also announced that a full news service on the M1 channel will resume in the second half of August, restoring regular bulletins and digital platform coverage. The restructuring includes granting independence to the Hungarian News Agency (Magyar Távirati Iroda Nonprofit Zrt) and appointing Dr. András Horváth as managing director of the newly unified Duna Media.
