Hungary minimum wage hike stalled by GDP growth

A planned 14 percent increase in the gross minimum wage in Hungary has been stalled due to economic conditions. Under a three-year multi-step agreement set to expire in 2027, wage hikes are tied to GDP and inflation rates.

While inflation remains below 3 percent, the current rate of GDP growth is insufficient to trigger the scheduled increase. The Tisza Party has attributed this failure to the Orbán government's economic management, though analysts note that the Hungarian economy remains highly vulnerable to international factors, including the economic performance of Germany and global instabilities stemming from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
