Hungary opposes accelerated EU accession for Ukraine
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar stated that Ukraine is not ready to join the European Union. He cited the country’s ongoing state of war and its failure to fulfill agreements regarding the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia as primary reasons for his position.
Magyar noted that while his government has agreed to begin accession negotiations, he opposes accelerating the process for political reasons. He emphasized that membership decisions should be based solely on a candidate country’s achievements. He further indicated that once the negotiation process is complete, the final decision regarding Ukraine’s admission to the EU will be determined in Hungary through a nationwide referendum.
