Hungary Parliament Abolishes Sovereignty Protection Office
The Hungarian Parliament voted 135 in favor, 44 against, with six abstentions to dissolve the Sovereignty Protection Office. Lawmakers concluded the agency performed no genuine public function and existed solely for political purposes. The amendment to the Constitution was already approved, and the dissolution law takes effect 15 days after its announcement, immediately terminating all ongoing investigations and the mandates of the office’s president, Lánczi Tamás, and his deputies.
The former head and his deputies must file asset declarations within 15 days and will receive no severance pay. The office’s legal successor is the Justice Ministry headed by Márta Görög. The agency previously operated with a budget of 6.2 billion forints and employed around 120 staff, drawing salaries totaling over 2 billion forints. Its closure fulfills a key promise of the Tisza Party after their electoral victory.
