Hungary PM pushes constitutional move to oust President Sulyok

German outlets Deutsche Welle, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and others warned that Hungary’s plan to remove President Sulyok Tamás by a special constitutional amendment poses a dangerous precedent for the rule of law. The reports said the rapid, two‑thirds‑majority‑driven changes could undermine democratic norms and jeopardise EU funding.

Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar Péter announced that the TISZA alliance seeks a non‑partisan president after Sulyok’s resignation and called for candidates without party affiliations. He noted that the amendment to Article 17 of the constitution has been signed, triggering a 30‑day window for the parliament to elect a successor. From 20 July, the speaker of the National Assembly, Ágnes Forsthoffer, will temporarily exercise the president’s duties. Péter also emphasized that the reforms aim to protect victims, children, and border communities, framing the move as necessary for national resilience.
