Hungary postpones parliamentary session amid heatwave and energy crisis

The Hungarian government withdrew its proposal to convene an extraordinary session of the National Assembly on August 3‑4, cancelling the planned meetings for Monday and Tuesday. Deputy Speaker Hallerné Nagy Anikó announced the decision, citing a third‑degree heat alert, ongoing drought and a resulting electricity shortage as the reasons.

The cancellation is presented as part of broader energy‑saving measures. Minister Ruff Bálint, head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said the government aims to set an example for energy conservation while addressing expected energy‑security challenges. Additional steps include turning off decorative lighting at state‑run institutions and other energy‑efficiency actions by the parliamentary office.
