Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced a new legislative initiative to investigate the wealth accumulation of Hungarian politicians. The proposed law, which will be submitted to Parliament, empowers the National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) to conduct retroactive investigations covering up to 20 years.

The scope of the investigation includes members of parliament, ministers, state secretaries, government commissioners, and prime ministerial commissioners. It also applies to individuals who held these positions within the last five years. For current officials, checks may begin two years after their first term starts. If a politician resigns or is removed from office, NAV must automatically initiate an investigation within 30 days.

NAV will examine real estate, bank accounts, company interests, insurance, and other potentially hidden assets to ensure they align with declared income and asset declarations. If a tax deficit of at least 5 million forints is identified, the individual's name and position will be publicly listed. In cases of suspected criminal activity, the findings will be referred to law enforcement.

Additionally, the government is introducing strict conflict-of-interest rules in the sports sector. Politicians and high-ranking officials will be prohibited from leading sports organizations that represent more than 500 athletes. The government also announced plans to increase tobacco taxes to generate 90 billion forints for healthcare development.
