Hungary proposes National Asset Recovery and Defence Office
The Hungarian government has introduced a proposal to establish a National Asset Recovery and Defence Office. The new agency would focus on reclaiming state assets and strengthening defence, while reducing the political role of the prosecutor’s office. Implementation would require amendments to 47 existing laws.
Political analysts note that the office could become a central tool in the government's anti‑corruption agenda, but critics warn it may concentrate power and risk politicising asset seizures. The proposal was presented by Prime Minister Magyar Péter during a special parliamentary session and is expected to be debated in the coming weeks.
