Hungary proposes new wealth tax for assets over 1 billion HUF
The Hungarian government has opened a social consultation process for a draft law introducing a new wealth tax. Under the proposal, individuals with net assets exceeding 1 billion HUF would be subject to a 1% tax on the portion up to 100 billion HUF, and a 1.5% tax on the portion exceeding 100 billion HUF.
The tax base includes a wide range of assets, such as real estate, cash, securities, holdings in both domestic and foreign companies, and crypto-assets. Notably, primary residences would not be exempt from this calculation. The tax would be based on the asset status as of December 31, 2026, with the first filing and payment deadline set for August 31, 2027.
Impact assessments suggest the measure could affect approximately 15,000 individuals and 2,000 wealth management entities, potentially generating 800 billion HUF in additional revenue over four years. For non-listed companies, valuation would be determined by a specific formula involving equity and average taxed profits. Spouses would be assessed independently based on their marital property agreements, and the 1 billion HUF threshold applies to each spouse separately.
