Hungary wealth tax proposal

Overview

The Hungarian government has initiated a social consultation process regarding a proposed draft law to introduce a new wealth tax. Scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027, the tax would target individuals with net assets exceeding 1 billion HUF.

Under the proposal, a 1% tax rate would apply to assets up to 100 billion HUF, increasing to 1.5% for any portion exceeding that threshold. The taxable base encompasses real estate, cash, securities, crypto-assets, and holdings in domestic and foreign companies. Notably, primary residences would not be exempt from these calculations.

Assessments indicate the measure could impact approximately 15,000 individuals and 2,000 wealth management entities, with a potential revenue generation of 800 billion HUF over four years. The tax will be based on asset status as of December 31, 2026, with the first payment deadline set for August 31, 2027. For non-listed companies, valuations will be determined by a formula involving equity and average taxed profits. Spouses will be assessed independently based on their marital property agreements.
