Hungary releases public data on hospital infections and outbreaks

The National Public Health and Pharmaceutical Center (NNGYK) has begun publishing institutional data regarding hospital infections and outbreaks in Hungary. This move follows a government decision in May to mandate the disclosure of previously withheld datasets.

Beatrix Oroszi, the national chief medical officer, stated that the primary goal of this transparency is not to rank institutions, but to encourage hospitals to implement necessary improvements for patient safety. Reducing infections is critical for both individual patients and the national healthcare system, as the economic burden of managing these infections is estimated to reach hundreds of billions of Hungarian forints annually.

While the data provides a new level of transparency, critics note that the current structure of the information may not yet be sufficient to help patients choose safer facilities. There are concerns that the data primarily reflects areas with high testing volumes and that many deaths linked to hospital-acquired infections, such as those involving antibiotic-resistant bacteria, may still not be fully captured in official statistics.
