Hungary requests 5.4 billion euro SAFE loan from EU

The European Commission is currently reviewing a SAFE loan request from Hungarian authorities totaling 5.4 billion euros, which is approximately 2 trillion forints at current exchange rates. A spokesperson for the Commission confirmed the request and stated that the EU welcomes the move by the Hungarian government.

The process will now move to an evaluation phase by Brussels, followed by required approval from the Council of the European Union. If approved, the Commission will sign the loan agreement with Hungary, allowing for the disbursement of funds.

This development follows recent statements from Hungarian Defense Minister Ruszin-Szendi, who previously noted that the government was weighing its options regarding the SAFE mechanism. He emphasized that because the funds are a loan that must be repaid with interest, the country's debt capacity must be carefully considered.
