Hungary EU SAFE defence loan request
Overview
Hungary has informed the European Commission that it will reduce its request for low-interest defence loans under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme to €5.4 billion. This amount is significantly lower than the €16 billion originally requested by the previous administration.
Officials noted the reduction follows a reassessment by the current government to evaluate corruption risks associated with previous proposals and to consider the country’s debt-bearing capacity. The funds may be used to replace existing contracts or to accelerate investments in transport and cybersecurity.
The European Commission is currently reviewing the €5.4 billion request. If approved by the Council of the European Union, the Commission will sign a loan agreement with Hungary to allow for the disbursement of funds. The Commission has stated it welcomes the move by the Hungarian government.
