Hungary and UK engage in diplomatic dispute over royal horse gift
A diplomatic dispute has emerged between Hungary and the United Kingdom regarding two Lipizzaner stallions, Nelson and Iveco, which were gifted to King Charles III for his 2024 coronation.
In July, the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture sent a letter to Buckingham Palace requesting the return of the horses to their state stud in Szilvásvárad. The communication was described as being “energetically formulated” or “firm.” Both the British Royal House and Hungarian officials have since attempted to downplay the incident, characterizing it as an administrative error.
A spokesperson for the Hungarian Embassy in London stated that the horses will remain in the United Kingdom “as originally intended.” The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture later clarified that the initial letter was “imprecisely formulated” and confirmed there are no plans to reclaim the animals, noting they should serve as “worthy ambassadors” of Hungarian breeding and bilateral relations.
In Hungary, the incident has caused political friction, with opposition parties calling it the “horse war” and demanding the release of the original letter to determine accountability for the diplomatic embarrassment.
