Hungary-UK Lipizzan horse diplomatic dispute

Overview

A diplomatic dispute arose between Hungary and the United Kingdom regarding two Lipizzan horses, Nelson and Iveco, which were gifted to King Charles III during his 2024 coronation. Following a “firmly worded” letter sent to Buckingham Palace requesting the return of the animals to the state stud farm in Szilvásvárad, the incident caused political tension in Hungary, where opposition leaders referred to the event as the “horse war”.

Both the Hungarian government and Buckingham Palace subsequently characterized the request as an administrative error. The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food clarified that a July letter requesting the termination of the loan agreement was “inaccurately formulated.” The Ministry corrected the error, stating that the horses—which remain Hungarian state property—will stay at the Royal Mews to serve as “worthy ambassadors” of Hungarian-British relations.
