Hungary Sets 2026 Deadline to Replace Old Paper ID Cards with eID

The Hungarian Ministry of Interior announced that, in line with EU regulations, all paper‑format personal identity cards will cease to be valid on 3 August 2026. Holders of the old book‑type IDs must apply in person for a new electronic identity card (eSzemélyi) at any government window.

Exceptions apply for citizens who already possess another valid official document, such as a card‑format driver’s licence or a private passport; in those cases the new e‑ID is not mandatory, though it is recommended for smoother procedures. Citizens aged 70 and over receive the new permanent ID free of charge. The ministry urges people to check their documents early and avoid last‑minute exchanges during the busy summer period.
