Hungary sets Aug 3 2026 deadline for old book‑format ID cards

The Hungarian Ministry of Interior announced that, in line with EU rules, all paper‑based, book‑format personal identification cards will stop being valid on 3 August 2026. The expiration will be entered automatically into the civil registry, so affected citizens will not receive individual notices.

Anyone who only holds the old‑type card must apply in person for a new electronic identity document (eSzemélyi) at any government window. Holders of other valid government IDs – such as a card‑type driver’s licence or a private passport – are not obliged to replace the book‑format card, though doing so is recommended for smoother administration. Citizens who turn 70 in the year of issuance receive the new card free of charge. Officials urge the public to complete the replacement before the busy summer period to avoid last‑minute delays.
