Hungary stops asbestos‑containing rock imports from Austria

Environment minister Gajdos László announced that, following negotiations in Vienna, shipments of asbestos‑containing crushed rock from Austrian mines will cease as of Friday. The decision avoids the need to shut down the mines and aims to eliminate the direct health risk.

The contaminated material already delivered to western Hungary will be neutralised, with remediation work slated for the affected areas. Over 300 locations across three counties – including Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg and Sopron – have been identified with asbestos‑tainted surfaces. Local authorities have reduced traffic speeds and applied water sprays to limit exposure, while some streets may require costly bitumen resurfacing, estimated at up to 20 million forints per street.

The minister emphasised that the action reflects the “polluter‑pays” principle and will protect public health while further disposal methods are planned.
