Hungary Announces 2026 Media Shift, New Trains, ID Card Deadline, Family Support
The daily newspaper Magyar Nemzet will publish its final issue on 31 July 2026 and relaunch as a 32‑page weekly from 1 August 2026, priced at 690 forints.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Viktor Vitézy revealed that eleven new InterCity electric multiple units built by Stadler will replace the Budapest‑Győr‑Szombathely and Budapest‑Győr‑Sopron routes, with further regional fleet renewals planned under EU funding.
Effective 3 August 2026, Hungary’s booklet‑style personal identification cards without an expiry date will become invalid. Holders, especially seniors, must apply for new cards at government offices; a transitional rule permits use of the old cards for social‑benefit claims until 31 December 2026.
The state will disburse family allowance twice in August 2026 (4 and 24 August) together with other benefits. The second payment includes the first 50,000‑forint installment of a new school‑start grant, part of a total 100,000 forint per child.
