Hungary to open M44, M5, and Main Road 5 interchange in December
The technical handover process for the complex interchange system connecting the M44 expressway, the M5 motorway, and Main Road 5 is scheduled to begin this Monday. Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy announced that the technical handover is expected to conclude by mid-November, with official opening to traffic anticipated in December.
The 50 billion HUF project creates a multi-level transportation facility designed to link three major routes. Key features include a full “cloverleaf” interchange at the junction of the M44 and M5, where the M44 crosses the motorway via an overpass. Additionally, the alignment of Main Road 5 has been redesigned to cross the M5 and M44 at a separate level, including a “half-cloverleaf” interchange with two roundabouts connecting Main Road 5 and the M44.
While sections of the M44 between Békéscsaba and Kecskemét have been in use since last April, and ramps toward Budapest have been available since June, this completion will finalize the network. Once operational, the system will provide direct connections from the M5 toward Békéscsaba and Kecskemét, as well as toward Szeged from Békéscsaba, improving accessibility for the eastern Great Plain region and reducing transit traffic through Kecskemét.
