Hungarian road infrastructure development
Overview
Hungary is advancing several major road infrastructure projects to improve national and regional connectivity.
In late September, the government announced the second phase of the M49 expressway construction. This 45-kilometer project aims to connect the M3 motorway to the Romanian border near Csenger, with a scheduled completion date of June 30, 2029. The project, estimated at 190 billion HUF, includes a new border crossing to facilitate travel toward Satu Mare, complementing ongoing expressway construction in Romania.
Separately, progress was reported on a 50 billion HUF interchange system connecting the M44 expressway, the M5 motorway, and Main Road 5. Following a technical handover process in November, the multi-level facility is expected to open to traffic in December. This development will finalize the network, providing direct connections toward Békéscsaba, Kecskemét, and Szeged, thereby improving accessibility for the eastern Great Plain region.
