Hungary to provide diesel tax relief for heavy vehicle operators
The Hungarian government has announced a temporary reduction in excise tax for diesel used by buses and heavy goods vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes. Effective until December 31, 2026, businesses can claim a refund of 25 HUF per liter, a mechanism similar to the one currently utilized by the agricultural sector.
Minister of Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy stated that the measure is expected to have a budgetary impact of approximately 6 billion HUF. The National Association of Private Carriers (NiT Hungary) welcomed the decision, noting that negotiations with the government have achieved significant objectives for the industry.
In addition to the tax relief, the government plans to tighten the enforcement of road toll payments. Following discussions with transport interest groups regarding unfair competition from operators who do not pay tolls regularly, authorities will significantly increase the number of personnel dedicated to toll monitoring and improve coordination between relevant organizations.
