Hungary to take over assets of major foundations and university boards
The Hungarian government is implementing significant changes to the management of several major foundations and university governing bodies. Péter Magyar announced that starting August 31, the state will assume the assets and responsibilities of the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, the Batthyány Lajos Foundation, and the Blue Planet Climate Foundation. This move ends their status as public interest asset managers, meaning they will no longer have special status or direct control over state assets and funding.
According to official reports, the Mathias Corvinus Collegium received over 130 billion forints in public funds and state real estate in 2020. The Batthyány Lajos Foundation received approximately 66 billion forints in state support between 2022 and 2026, while the Blue Planet Climate Foundation received nearly 25 billion forints during the same period. These organizations may continue to operate as civil organizations but will no longer hold their previous official status.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Education and Children has finalized new leadership appointments for university foundations. The János Neumann University Foundation has appointed a new board and supervisory committee, with Dr. Tímea Kiss serving as board chair. Additionally, the Ministry has selected new members for the Széchenyi István University Foundation board and supervisory committee, following a selection process involving the university senate.
