Hungary wage negotiations face budget constraints

Discussions regarding wage increases in Hungary for the upcoming year are expected to be contentious as labor unions and employers evaluate the impact of the national budget. While a three-year wage agreement theoretically suggests a 14 percent increase, economic growth has not been sufficient to meet this target.

The government and the Hungarian National Bank anticipate inflation will stabilize around a 3 percent target next year. Economic forecasts suggest a GDP growth of 2.4 percent. While net wages rose by 10 percent this year, exceeding inflation, future increases will be scrutinized within the framework of the Permanent Consultation Forum (VKF).

Representatives from the Ministry of Finance are expected to participate in upcoming meetings to discuss wage adjustments in the context of the budget. Labor leaders, including MASZSZ President Róbert Zlati, have called for clarity on whether the government and employers are committed to meaningful increases.
