Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar Péter faces EU migration pact pressure

The European Union’s new migration pact, set to take effect on 12 June, will bind member states to shared responsibility for asylum seekers. Hungarian MP Balázs Németh warned that without decisive action by Prime Minister Magyar Péter, Hungary could face the same pressures as Greece’s Crete, where the coast guard rescued more than 500 migrants in two days and where over half a million people are stranded in Libya awaiting passage to Europe.

Fidesz MP Szentkirályi Alexandra cautioned that the country’s 11‑year‑old defensive stance on immigration could be undone, arguing the pact effectively legalises migration and threatens national security and cultural identity.

Critics also note that Magyar Péter’s pledge to block “illegal migrants” may be undermined by EU mechanisms that could re‑classify arrivals with documents, raising fears of a loss of sovereign control over Hungary’s borders.
