Hungary's 2026 elections hailed as European democratic signal amid tax reforms and Fidesz criticism
The Europa-Union Germany praised Hungary's parliamentary elections on 13 April 2026, calling the high voter turnout a clear signal of commitment to freedom, rule of law and European cooperation. Andrea Wechsler, president of the organisation, said the vote “is more than a national decision – it is a signal for the whole of Europe.” Vice‑president Gaby Bischoff added that the turnout shows citizens’ demand for change and strengthens European democracy.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar, addressing a two‑day special session of parliament, said citizens are “again curious” about what the government decides. He announced tax relief measures, including exemption of VAT on prescription medicines and a cut of the VAT rate on firewood to 5 %. Magyar also criticised former premier Viktor Orbán and the Fidesz party, asserting that Fidesz “cannot be saved.” Fidesz members left the chamber after Balázs Hankó was silenced.
