János Bóka named Fidesz parliamentary group leader; Orbán urges resistance

Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party elected János Bóka as the new leader of its parliamentary group, replacing Gergely Gulyás who stepped down after a constitutional amendment would have barred him from the next term. The unanimous vote followed a proposal by former prime minister Viktor Orbán, who also announced a “Declaration of Resistance” urging a peaceful opposition to the new Tisza‑led government. Orbán described the current system as “tyranny” and accused Prime Minister Péter Magyar of dismantling checks and balances, citing recent moves such as the suspension of public broadcasters, the removal of the president and the seizure of Fidesz data servers.

Opposition figures abroad, including Flemish politician Tom von Grieken, voiced support for Fidesz, condemning what they see as an authoritarian turn. The developments mark a sharp political split in Hungary following the April election that ended Orbán’s 16‑year premiership.
