Hungary's GYSEV to Replace InterCity Fleet with 11 New Stadler Trains by 2028

Transport Minister David Vitézy announced that GYSEV will replace its Budapest‑Győr‑Szombathely and Budapest‑Győr‑Sopron InterCity services with 11 new five‑car IC trainsets by 2028. The first two units have been completed at the Stadler plant in Siedlce, Poland; their car bodies were built in Szolnok, Hungary, and final assembly is taking place in Poland.

The new trains will be climate‑controlled, low‑floor, and equipped with both first‑ and second‑class seating, full accessibility features and onboard cameras, making them Hungary’s first completely barrier‑free and fully monitored InterCity coaches. Funding comes from an European Investment Bank loan, with a 50 % co‑financing contribution linked to Austrian state investment. The programme also includes upgrades to long‑distance routes serving Debrecen, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Pécs and Veszprém.
