Hungary's hotel sector profit squeezes as visitor numbers dip

Hungary’s tourism industry is facing a profit squeeze, especially in Budapest’s hotel market, where a strong forint has eroded earnings. The Központi Statisztikai Hivatal (KSH) reported that in June the country saw 1.9 million guests stay 4.3 million nights, 2.2 % fewer guests and 2.5 % fewer overnight stays than the same month a year earlier. Hotel and other commercial accommodation recorded a modest 2.2 % rise in guest numbers, while private and other lodging fell 12 % in guests and 15 % in foreign visitors.

Overall hospitality establishments have shrunk sharply, with 41,852 venues in 2025 – an 18 % drop from the more than 51,000 recorded in 2019. Analysts attribute the decline to the post‑pandemic energy crisis and simultaneous spikes in food, wage and energy costs, which have tightened margins across the sector. Regional data show domestic guests increasing by 5.1 % in Budapest but falling by 1.9 % around Lake Balaton, and foreign visitor numbers declined by 1.8 % overall, with a 15 % drop in the Szeged area.
