In mid‑2026 Hungary’s tourism sector showed a clear contraction. June data revealed a 2.2 % drop in tourist arrivals and a 2.5 % decline in overnight stays compared with a year earlier, while domestic arrivals edged up 2.3 % and international arrivals slipped 0.2 %. Hotels continued to dominate the market, accounting for roughly two‑thirds of stays and recording a modest 2.2 % rise in arrivals.

The broader industry context pointed to tightening profit margins. A strong forint reduced earnings for hotels, and higher food, wage and energy costs further squeezed profitability. Overall accommodation venues fell sharply, with the total number of establishments dropping 18 % from 2019 levels. While Budapest saw a slight domestic guest increase, regions such as Lake Balaton and Szeged experienced declines, and foreign visitor numbers fell nationwide, contributing to the sector’s revenue pressure.
