Hungary's independent fuel stations protest fixed fuel prices and demand compensation

The Independent Fuel Stations Association (FBSZ) in Hungary organised protests demanding the government compensate losses caused by the legally mandated "protected" fuel price and overhaul the regulatory framework. The association says the fixed price has caused a 30‑40% market loss for private stations, threatens supply in small towns that rely on a single pump, and undermines rule of law and EU regulations.

FBSZ leaders report unsuccessful negotiations with the government, call for transparent, consistent rules that protect both the market and consumers, and warn that further closures could force drivers to travel 15‑20 kilometres for fuel. They note that independent stations contribute about 30% of the tax revenue from the fuel sector, amounting to roughly 1.2 trillion forints annually, and have not received the promised compensation agreed before the government change.
