Hungary's JÉGER ice‑mitigation system faces independent investigation

Hungary’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced it will commission an independent scientific study and a nationwide farmer survey on the JÉGER ice‑mitigation system after a civil petition gathered roughly 12,000 signatures. The inquiry will examine the system’s transparency, the placement and density of its generators, possible effects of the silver‑iodine technology on precipitation, and the clarity of its legal framework. Results will inform the government’s decision on the system’s future operation.

In the Serbian city of Szabadka (Subotica), local authorities completed a damage assessment of ice‑related losses in line with national legislation and forwarded the report to the Hungarian Meteorological Institute, which will submit an extraordinary report to the Serbian government. The municipality also announced new agricultural support measures for the coming year, including subsidies for insurance premiums, loan interest, and livestock assistance, aiming to help farmers recover and increase resilience to future weather events.
