Hungary Ministry of the Interior investigates August 20 event procurement
The Hungarian Ministry of the Interior has launched an investigation into the procurement process for the August 20 state celebrations following allegations of corruption and unfair competitive advantages.
Leaked emails, published by former MP Ákos Hadházy, suggest that Hardrock Kft., the company that won the contract, had contact with the previous organizer, Lounge Event, weeks before the official tender was announced. The correspondence indicates that Hardrock Kft. may have obtained sensitive information regarding budgets and technical requirements, potentially giving them an improper advantage. The contract was awarded for approximately 4 billion HUF, a significant reduction from the 17.5 billion HUF spent in previous years.
Márk Radnai, a government commissioner and deputy leader of the Tisza Party, has denied any involvement in the procurement or organization, stating his email address was only included in copy on some messages and that he did not read or respond to them. Hardrock Kft. managing director Dániel Besnyő defended the company, stating they hired 13 specialists from Lounge Event as private individuals to ensure professional execution and denied any political affiliations.
In response to the controversy, the Mi Hazánk Movement has filed a criminal complaint with the Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office, alleging crimes including breach of trust and abuse of office.
