Hungary state celebration procurement investigation

The Hungarian Ministry of the Interior has launched an investigation into the procurement process for the August 20 state celebrations following allegations of corruption and unfair competitive advantages.

Leaked emails published by former MP Ákos Hadházy suggest that the winning contractor, Hardrock Kft., may have obtained sensitive information regarding budgets and technical requirements through contact with the previous organizer, Lounge Event, prior to the official tender announcement. While the contract was awarded for approximately 4 billion HUF—a significant decrease from the 17.5 billion HUF spent in previous years—concerns have been raised that the selection process may have been a formality.

Government commissioner Márk Radnai has denied involvement in the procurement, stating his email address was only copied on messages he did not read or respond to. Hardrock Kft. managing director Dániel Besnyő defended the company, noting they hired specialists from the previous organizer to ensure professional execution. In response to the controversy, the Mi Hazánk Movement has filed a criminal complaint alleging crimes including breach of trust and abuse of office.
