Hungary's national animal welfare body launches 50‑million‑forint sterilisation program

The Hungarian Animal Welfare Organization (MÁOSZ) has started a nationwide animal sterilisation programme in March 2026, funded with a 50‑million‑forint grant from the Közös Ügyünk az Állatvédelem Alapítvány. The grant is distributed through an internal competition among MÁOSZ’s roughly 80 member organisations across 17 counties.

To date the initiative has sterilised 682 animals – 289 dogs and 393 cats – and transferred more than 20 million forints directly to veterinarians. The programme, which will continue until 31 December 2026, aims to cut the stray‑animal population, ease the burden on shelters and reduce animal‑related health risks in public spaces.
