Hungary's National Cultural Fund scandal deepens with arrests

Investigators have detained six officials linked to the National Cultural Fund (NKA) over alleged misallocation of more than 17 billion forints. The Kecskeméti District Court ordered a one‑month detention for the suspects, who include former NKA deputy head Bús Balázs, former deputy mayor of Óbuda, and other senior ministry and fund managers. Authorities cite “particularly significant pecuniary damage” and risk of evidence tampering as reasons for the arrests, with the possibility of extensions pending further judicial review.

The probe, led by the NAV South‑Alföld Criminal Directorate and the Bács‑Kiskun County Prosecutor's Office, focuses on accusations that NKA decisions from December 2024 onward exceeded legal limits and favoured Fidesz‑aligned artists and politicians. Media personalities such as Hajós András and activist‑actor Molnár Áron have publicly criticised the political patronage, calling for a transparent and merit‑based funding system. The scandal, dubbed the “NKA‑botrány,” has already resulted in multiple arrests and is expected to generate further legal and political repercussions.
