NAV closes investigation into Ukrainian cash and gold shipment

The Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has officially closed its criminal investigation into the seizure of a large cash and gold shipment involving Ukrainian transporters. The investigation, which was initially launched on suspicion of money laundering, was terminated due to a lack of evidence of any crime.

In March, the Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK) intercepted two armored vehicles on the M0 motorway. The shipment, which was traveling from Raiffeisen Bank International AG in Austria to JSC Oschadbank in Ukraine, contained 40 million dollars, 35 million euros, and 9 kilograms of gold. Seven Ukrainian citizens were detained during the operation and subsequently expelled from Hungary.

NAV stated that the origin of the assets has been clarified following documentation from Austrian authorities. Raiffeisen Bank International AG provided evidence verifying the origin of the currency and precious metals, as well as confirming that JSC Oschadbank had completed the payment. The investigation concluded that the assets did not originate from criminal activity and no other crimes were identified.
